Christmas in Barbados!
Christmas in Barbados: A Celebration of Culture, Food, and Tradition
As the year draws to a close, the spirit of Christmas shines bright across the island. Known for its beaches and hospitality, Barbados transforms during the month of December. If you're considering a getaway for the holidays, especially in a luxurious villa rental, here’s a glimpse of what Christmas in Barbados has to offer!
Traditions
Steeped in tradition, Barbados blends African, English, and Caribbean influences. Our “season” officially starts after Independence Day (November 30) with the arrival of December. Homes are spruced up with fresh coats of paint, curtains are replaced, and gardens are tidied—it's the time to get things done. This tradition of "fixing up" your home is an important part of Christmas in Barbados and reflects the pride we take in opening up our homes to family and friends.
Another beloved tradition of a Bajan Christmas is midnight mass on Christmas Eve. Families, dressed in their finest attire, attend a church service at midnight. Before the service, however, a dinner party would most certainly have taken place!
Food & Drink
Christmas in Barbados is not complete without a feast. One of our staples is ham, glazed with a mixture of sugar, mustard, and various spices to create a sweet and savory flavor. Another traditional dish is fish cakes made from saltfish. Not technically a Bajan dish, but Guyana’s national dish, Pepperpot, has become very popular on the island and is now commonly enjoyed during the season.
For dessert, there’s black cake, a rich fruit cake soaked in rum and infused with spices. To wash it all down, sorrel, a refreshing drink made from hibiscus flowers and spiced with ginger, is a popular choice. Sorrel means Christmas on the island.
